
Mike S. Zafirovski is president & chief executive officer of Nortel.
Prior to joining Nortel, Zafirovski was president and chief operating officer of Motorola, Inc. from July 2002 to February 2005. Zafirovski joined Motorola in June 2000 to lead the company's mobile devices business, which included cellular phones, relate! d software and consumer two-way radios.
Before joining Motorola, Zafirovski spent 25 years at General Electric (GE), including 13 years as president and CEO of five businesses in the industrial (GE Lighting) and GE Capital businesses. After joining the GE financial leadership program in 1975, he was promoted to the GE corporate audit staff in 1978 - a key training assignment for leadership talent in the company. For the next three-and-a-half years, he conducted financial and operational reviews at nine of the company's businesses spanning five continents. Before assuming his general manager posts, he held a series of increasingly senior positions in finance, marketing, and strategy/business development at several GE Capital businesses.
Zafirovski holds a B.A. in mathematics from Edinboro University in Pennsylvania where he also captained the intercollegiate soccer and swimming teams. In 2002, Edinboro University awarded Zafirovski with an honorary doctorate degree! . A native of Macedonia , he received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2004.
Zafirovski serves on the board of directors of Boeing, The Economic Club of Chicago, United Way of Chicago , Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago , the Museum of Science and Industry of Chicago and the Macedonian Arts Council. He and his wife Robin co-chair the Duke University Parents (Class of 2008) Board.
